Yay for three-day weekends!!

Yay for three-day weekends!!  An extra weekend day is a great opportunity to catch up on rest, or plan that family fun day that has been on hold.  I hope you are able to make the most of your extra day this weekend!!

It has been a wonderful first month of school!  Thank you for the grace and flexibility you have shown as Parrish continues to work on major punch list items.  There is still some work to be completed, but good progress is being made.  Ms. Sharlene received the serving line on Thursday, completing the kitchen.  I received notice that all floors (LVT and carpet) on the upper level have been replaced/repaired if damaged during renovation.  Please notify me by Wednesday AM if you have flooring that needs to be addressed (top floor ONLY at this time).  This final sign-off must be provided to Parrish by Wednesday afternoon.  The heavy rains tested our new roof, with only very two minor leaks in the building.  And, the power outage (not related to our renovation) tested our new emergency generator which proved to be valuable!  Kitchen & lunch service experienced no interruptions, thanks to the emergency generator!  Prior to renovation, lunch service would have been suspended during a power outage.

Major work to be completed over Fall Break includes repaving & painting the front parking lot and gravel extension lot, final landscaping around the flag pole, final pressure washing of the building, refinishing original wood inside 200 & 300 rooms.

WELCOME BACK, MRS. HARPE!

Mrs. Harpe will return from maternity leave on Tuesday!  We are excited to have her back on campus!  Her wonderful supply teacher, Ms. Petty, will transition to Mrs. Maddox's supply leave in a few weeks.

SOR INSTRUCTIONAL REMINDERS!

Now that we have finished the first month of school, our SOR practices should be in full swing in our classrooms.  We got off to a VERY strong start with assessment and skill-based small group instruction.  Small groups are in full swing across the school in K-5th grade - meeting our goal of EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY in K-3rd grade.  In 4th-5th grade our reading specialists are serving students below grade level EVERY DAY for 30-90 minutes, depending on need.

Review these EIGHT instructional practices/routines to support Oral Language & Word Conscious Classrooms.  Have many of these practices/routines become part of your daily practice?  This is not a checklist, and it would not be expected to see each of these practices every day!

1.  Ask open ended prompts to engage students in putting into words what they have learned, expecting students to use complete sentences in responses.

  • Examples:  What makes you say that?  Why...?  Tell me how...
2.  Integrates brief, structured partner tasks throughout the lesson.
  • Examples:  Turn & Talk, Think-Pair-Share
3.  Uses sentence frames, question prompts, and word banks to support participation.  Includes total participation with choral response and/or "pick sticks".

4.  Teaches and models the use of academic language at the word, sentence, and discourse level.  Students use words orally in the sentence level.
  • Example:  Selects 3-5 academic terms to teach/use during the week (sparkle words, WOW words, etc).  These words are selected across the grade level.
  • Example:  Selects 1-2 vocabulary terms during read aloud to teach before/during reading.  Words selected because they help students understand the meaning of the text.  Longer text read over multiple days would have more words selected.
5.  Teacher applies explicit strategies to introduce and promote understanding of vocabulary, selecting HIGH utility words (words that can be used across multiple text, content areas, etc).
  • Examples:  Use contextual examples (pictures, demonstrations, realia, models), student-friendly definitions, repeated exposure to words, examples/non-examples, creating word networks
6.  Teacher uses maintenance activities to promote vocabulary.
  • Examples:  Word jars, word journals/logs, Post & Tally (post/pin word on an index card to teacher lanyard, tally who can use the word most during the day), vocabulary posted with picture supports
7.  Teacher creates a word conscious classroom by using robust vocabulary and providing repeated opportunities for students to practice new vocabulary in writing and speaking encouraging students to use words in school and at home.
