WHOOHOO!  You made it to Thanksgiving, and in the words of our Kinder ministers, "Praise the Lord!"  It was a great week of feasts, Kinder pilgrims, Wampanoag men/women, and turkeys!  Thank you for your flexibility with the busy events of the week.  As we move into the final weeks of Q2, our days will be filled with W&W Module and Math unit completion, assessment, field trips, and celebration.  Consistent routines will be very important during December to maximize your instructional time and provide necessary structure for students.

OLC TEACHING CART
Mrs. Moore has created a teaching cart for common use in the OLC.  If you are taking a class to the OLC for a lesson and would like access to commonly used teaching supplies, the cart is available for your use.  You will find the cart in the book room.  Please return to the book room after your use.  Thank you, Mrs. Moore, for putting this together!



TEAM HOLIDAY TREES
Your team holiday tree were delivered TODAY.  Your team can decorate the tree in any way you wish - theme tree, crafted with student ornaments, etc.  Trees should be decorated by 12/5.

THE HIVE FIVE, EPISODE 2
The latest episode of The Hive Five dropped this week!  Featuring 5th grade students, this podcast will bring you the latest jokes and notes from around West Side.  In this episode, students interview a former professional mascot (HINT:  This mascots mom works at West Side!).  


INDOOR RECESS REMINDER!
Chromebooks should not be used during indoor recess. Students can play board games, card games, draw, facilitate movement games, make bracelets, build with Legos, the sky is the limit!  For other indoor recess ideas, visit HERE.

LEADERSHIP ATLANTA VISITS WEST SIDE, 12/5
We are excited to welcome some of the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2025 to West Side on 12/5.  The visitors will be on campus from 10:00-12:00.  Please reinforce hallway transition expectations before students move about the building this day.  Additionally, we encourage you to keep up quality student work in the hallways. :)

READING SMALL GROUPS END, 12/6
Reading small groups end on 12/6.  Please maintain consistent routines during your small group blocks to ensure LDAs can be completed in a timely manner.  Learning activities should be thoroughly planned and any unstructured technology time strictly limited. 

Reading Specialists will pull individual students the week of 12/9 to administer LDAs.  If you have questions regarding MOY LDA administration, or need support in administering assessments/entering data - please let Mary Claire or Katy know!  

WINTER MAP, 12/9-12/13
As we prepare for Winter MAP in December, please note these important dates!
  • 12/2 - Carla will send the Winter MAP Testing Details email.  Read this information THOROUGHLY!
  • 12/4 - Testing Folders placed in teacher boxes (Remember - look for the NEW folder!)

We look forward to giving back to our local community during our 4th annual Stinger Serve Day!  ALL students should wear their WS Field Trip Shirt* on 12/13.  It will be another impactful day of service to our local community!  Please arrive to the auditorium during your assigned service time.

Please see the class holiday party schedule below.  Your Room Parent should be reaching out to you to find out how they can help plan the party - with food, crafts, games, etc.  Early dismissal sheets will be provided to each HR teacher.  IMPORTANT NOTE!  If a student is dismissed BEFORE 11:30, they will be counted ABSENT for the day as it is less than 1/2 the school day. We would not encourage 2nd & 5th grade students to check-out early following the class party for this reason.

Fall MAP & SOR Coaching Week = JEANS!

This week brought the joy of familiar routines to whole group and small group instruction!  Our students have settled so well into your high expectations for learning.  We saw small group instruction start right at the skill level appropriate for each student.  Next week during the SOR coaching week, we will review best practices for STEPS Lessons, HFW & Oral Language.  STEPS will provide the framework necessary for our instruction to "move as quick as it can, but as slow as it must."  Your lesson preparation during small group reading will ensure adequate practice opportunities (30+) are available every day for students to read and write words aligned to the target skill.  If you would like support planning for reading small group lessons, reach out to Mary Claire (K-3) or Katy (4-5).   On the math front, Katy shared district resources available on Schoology to support math instructional planning.  If you find you would like more time to...

Is it Spring Break yet?

  YES!!  The answer is, YES!!  You all made it to the most glorious break of the year after months of hard work and student progress.  In the last two weeks, we've shared with teams some remarkable student progress data in reading fluency (K-3rd), writing (4th-5th), and math (2nd-5th).  Clear evidence of the impact you've made over the last several months.  You have earned this break!  When we return, it will be a busy season - remain committed to maximizing the remaining instructional time with students.
