Happy Thanksgiving!!


 It was a busy week, but we are gobbling into Thanksgiving Break with our minds, bellies, and hearts full. 
  • Minds - Successful SOR week learning about sentence expansion, fragments, and sentence types
  • Bellies - In two days our amazing nutrition staff served nearly 900 meals of turkey and all the fixins'.  PTA provided an extra special, super yummy chili lunch that came at just the right time.  
  • Hearts - Our Kindergarten Stingers showed all the knowledge they have learned about Thanksgiving, traditions, and turkeys to a packed auditorium.  Hundreds of families and friends joined their students to share a meal and enjoy the company of classmates at our Thanksgiving feast. We celebrated birthday(s) for some special Stinger staff members.  

We hope you have a wonderful time with family and friends, both near and far.  While the break will likely fly by, we hope you take a moment to reflect on the incredible work you are doing, the impact you have on students, and how YOU make West Side the best place to bee!  We are beyond grateful for you.   

SOR WEEK RECAP - INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS TO PUT NEW KNOWLEDGE INTO PRACTICE!

  • Design and implement TWR sentence expansion using basic (K & 1st) and subordinating conjunctions (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th)
  • Connecting sentence expansion with questions words and implement teaching students to generate questions as a strategy to support text comprehension (2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th)
  • Integrate TWR converting fragment sentence activities (2nd & 3rd)
  • Design & implement TWR activities for sentence types (2nd & 3rd)

Enrichment Club Make-Ups 
The following enrichment clubs will continue for one more week following the break. (yoga, cheer, and soccer) Communication has been shared with families, through Community Schools, regarding these make-up sessions.

1. Silent Auction Teacher Experiences

The Silent Auction is one of the largest PTA fundraising events of the year!  Each year, teachers and staff give their time and talents for experiences with our students.  The WS Staff Experiences are the BIGGEST success of our Silent Auction.  The PTA is now gathering staff experiences to include in this year's Silent Auction!  Please submit your experience at the link below by November 17.  Thank you for the many ways you support our PTA!

OTHER FALL/WINTER MILE & TD DATES

  • No MILE 10/30-11/17 due to gifted testing
  • 10/27 - TD Session 1 ends
  • 12/15 - MILE ends
  • 11/17 - Gifted testing window closes
  • Between late December/early January - Gifted testing results returned and eligibility determined.
  • 1/8 - MILE resumes; MILE begins for newly identified gifted students
  • 1/22 - TD Session 2 begins

FIELD TRIP PAYMENTS

The RevTrak store is NOW live!  Please include in your next several weekly newsletters reminders to families regarding field trip payments.  Field trips can be paid for the year, or before each trip.  It is important we gather field trip payments from as many students as possible to ensure these experiences can be provided to our students.

Fall MAP & SOR Coaching Week = JEANS!

This week brought the joy of familiar routines to whole group and small group instruction!  Our students have settled so well into your high expectations for learning.  We saw small group instruction start right at the skill level appropriate for each student.  Next week during the SOR coaching week, we will review best practices for STEPS Lessons, HFW & Oral Language.  STEPS will provide the framework necessary for our instruction to "move as quick as it can, but as slow as it must."  Your lesson preparation during small group reading will ensure adequate practice opportunities (30+) are available every day for students to read and write words aligned to the target skill.  If you would like support planning for reading small group lessons, reach out to Mary Claire (K-3) or Katy (4-5).   On the math front, Katy shared district resources available on Schoology to support math instructional planning.  If you find you would like more time to dig into math planning for your t
