Apple Treats & Jeans!

It's been a wonderful FULL week of learning!  Teams are nearing completion of W&W M1 to prepare for mini-units before the start of W&W M2.  Math units are also coming to a close for the start of new units.  In reading small groups, continue to plan intentional STEPS lessons - addressing every STEP, every day!  Next week, our 5th grade students and several support staff (including Mandy, Lindsay, Katy, Anna, and Carrie) will be on the annual Blue Ridge overnight trip - Fall edition.  Please reach out to Christina, Carla, or T'Shunta if you have any needs that would have been met by Mandy, Lindsay, Katy, or Carrie!

Before we welcome Fall Break and Autumn, let's bring on all the apple treats & and jeans with a mid-week celebration!

Wednesday - Apple Pies & Jeans!

Thursday - Apple Nacho Bar & Jeans!

CONFERENCE WEEK SCHEDULE

  • Pull-out math small groups for 1st & 4th grade are unable to continue, but in-class small group should carry on
NUMBER SENSE IN ACTION!
This week in PLCs, Katy began a study of number sense to support Numerical Reasoning and Algebraic Reasoning in the classroom.  Before Fall break, put the first two strategies in practice with Subitizing  and Choral Counting.   Reach out to Katy if you would like these strategies modeled in the classroom.

SOR CYCLE 5.1
Our first SOR Cycle for the school year begins after Fall break.  Look for additional details to come next week.  For now, mark your calendars for these SOR Cycle activities.
  • SOR Walks:  SOR Facilitator will be on campus 9/29-10/1 for SOR walks.  All teachers scheduled to be visited will receive an email from Katy by 9/19, along with the observation rubric.
  • SOR PLCs:  SOR Facilitator will be on campus 10/6-10/9 for PD and coaching support.  SOR PLCs are scheduled for 10/7 and 10/8.
THINKING ABOUT SOR!
The focus for our first SOR Cycle is Text Comprehension & Written Expression.  Refresh practices in these areas during whole group and small group instruction with the following:
  • Do your lessons activate prior knowledge to build new background knowledge and content vocabulary?

  • How often do you revisit the purpose of reading throughout the lesson (before, during, and after reading)?

  • Have you explicitly introduced or reviewed text structure when working with text?

  • Do students use or teachers model use graphic organizers to organize narrative text (character/setting, initiating event, internal response, plan, actions/attempts, consequence/resolution)? K-2 teachers: Story Grammar Marker

  • Do students use or teachers model with graphic organizers to organize information from expository text?

  • Do your lessons purposefully support the construction of a mental model by engaging students in conversation about the content and help students communicate what they learned?

  • Are TWR strategies used daily to support sentence level writing?

Can you find this teaching poster in your classroom? If not - get one from Katy! :)

TECH TALK WITH KIM - ALL ABOUT WINDOWS 11!

It’s finally that time!  Microsoft is ending their support for Windows 10 requiring our laptops to migrate over to Windows 11 for security.  If your laptop was given to you after June 2025, it already has Windows 11.  Look for my email on Monday to choose an appointment time between September 16th and  November 3rd

Some of you will receive a notification indicating your laptop does not have enough storage available for the update.  Mine is definitely in that group!  If so, you will need to move unnecessary files to a thumb drive or upload them to Google Drive.  Pictures and videos take up the most space, Fyi.  Please get started!  Thanks!

For you techies out there, our update will take up to 50 GB of free space remaining in Disk C.
