HOCO in Marietta!
What a FUN & busy HOCO week! We had a great time celebrating the Marietta spirit with you during our annual tailgate. Kudos to the grill masters - Barry Adkison & Mr. Williams (Lindsay's dad!). It's going to be a night a parade fun and football fanfare! Look for the scarecrow, lion, and tinman on the parade trail - oh my!
Even in the midst of all the fun, you managed to stay focused in the classroom and bring your professionalism to our SOR PLCs. Thank you for your active engagement and participation. As you finalize preparations for conference week, please do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything! We are here to support!

SOR WEEK FOLLOW-UP & RESOURCES!
Katy & Gilberte shared these resources, many of which are familiar, as a follow-up to our SOR week. As you continue to plan STEPS lessons to support text comprehension and written expression, these resources are great tools!
- Read Works Texts - K through 5th
- Text Structure Poster - list text structures along with corresponding graphic organizers
- Graphic Organizers - features text structure organizers
- STEPS Planning Sheet - blank 5-day organizer
- Comprehension Menu - lists different activities that can be done before, during and after reading
- NEW Resource - Commonlit.org - Grades 3-8 resource that provides a ton of Lexile level text on a ton of topics that come with paired texts at times and videos - it also has comprehension questions and teacher guidance for instruction without being a TE - very teacher and student friendly with thoughtful texts and materials
These reflective questions will continue to support your explicit instruction and gradual release in whole group and small group instruction:
- Was the teaching point explicit and learning activities well aligned to the stated teaching point?
- Were students given an opportunity to strengthen vocabulary associated with the text or an idea behind the text?
- Was guided practice provided for students, with teacher providing corrective feedback?
- Are there opportunities for oral and written practice of the teaching point?
- Was there a closing activity where students could demonstrate their independent understanding of what was taught?
Last! Take a few minutes to watch this quick video of Anita Archer, QUEEN BEE of explicit instruction, as she describes its role in supporting novice and struggling learners. All students are novice learners when learning something NEW! We shared this video with the SOR implementation team.
