Full Week & 3-day Weekend!

We had a FULL week of learning and classroom visits.  Thank you to the teachers who opened their doors for W&W observations and the next round of LJFA Walks.  It is evident that our staff is working hard and our students are becoming more skilled readers and writers.  Across the school we observed students exposed to complex text, rich vocabulary, lessons that built text comprehension, and students writing about text.  As we continue to refine practices to support text comprehension, remember the instructional strategies grounded in the science of reading... how do your W&W lessons (or Reading SG lessons for consolidated readers) address these practices?

  • Establish a purpose for reading and teach relevant vocabulary that builds new knowledge
  • Assist students in organizing new understandings by explicitly teaching or reviewing text structure
  • Use graphic organizers during/after reading, that match the text structure type, for students to demonstrate understanding
  • Constructs a mental model by engaging students in conversation about the text
  • Support students in communicating what they learned from the text by using graphic organizers
Text Structure teaching charts were placed in boxes before the break.  If you need another one for your classroom, let Katy know!  Coming soon... Editable Text Structure Graphic Organizers!
