A GRAND Day!

It was a GRAND GrandPals Day!  Thank you for your hospitality today greeting and mingling with all the Grands!  I know this day is very special to each of them & their Stinger.  

We have just 5 days until Fall Break!  It will be a busy week with field trips, hosting MCS APs, and PTA celebrations.  We also have our annual PTA Pizza on the Playground!  A fun, laid back event for all families!  We will be ready to rest next Friday!

  • A focus on T & P in STEPS

SMALL GROUP REFLECTIONS
Students have received small group reading instruction for 19 days this school year! Routines are well established and you have built rapport with your small groups. These instructional priorities should be at the forefront of your planning.
  1. Students should master a phonics skill by the end of the second week of instruction. Does your formative data show this rate of mastery? Are you assessing skills every 1-2 weeks? Cox Campus Skills Assessment are a great ready made resource!
  2. Students should have AMPLE practice during small group. AMPLE practice includes speaking, reading, and writing words with the focus skill. How much is enough practice? Aim for 30 words every lesson. Fluency grids or fluency phrases are a great way to get in 30!
  3. During practice, every student does the reading. Practice should not include popcorn reading, round robin reading, or students listening to the teacher read aloud. What does practice include Students whisper reading, choral reading, or silently reading a teacher selection of text (for our 3rd-5th graders).
  4. Comprehension focus group (that's you 2nd-5th grades!) - Is there a clearly defined purpose for reading? Is there explicit alignment to text structure? Are students speaking and writing about the text structure?

UPCOMING 1/2-DAY PLANNINGS
Team leaders are developing an agenda for your team 1/2-day planning time (DUE 9/15). Katy's office can be used as your meeting place. All teachers should ensure lesson plans are provided for coverage staff.

MCS AP MEETING AT WEST SIDE, 9/16
West Side will host the MCS AP meeting next week. The meeting will take place in the auditorium. Please remind students of respectful hallway transitions. Classroom visits will occur. If you're scheduled for a classroom visit, you received an email today.

TOTY RECOGNITION AT MHS GAME, 9/18
Rachel & TOTYs from all schools in our district will be recognized at the MHS game on Friday, 9/18 at 7:10 PM. Come out to show your support! GO MRS. MADDOX & GO BIG BLUE!

SOAR BUS SAFETY STUDENT PROGRAM, 9/28 & 10/1
Our district transportation department will be on campus on 9/30 & 10/1 for annual SOAR Bus Safety. Please check the schedule linked below for your class program time. Buses will be parked in the car loop.


HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH PROGRAM, 9/30 @ 2PM
We will have a school-wide assembly on 9/30 to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Please arrive to the gym by 2:00 PM.

2nd grade teachers - Specials teachers will bring your students. Please rejoin your class in the gym at 2:10 PM.
1st grade teachers - At 2:15, you may begin your planning time and specials teachers will supervise your classes.

PTA SILENT AUCTION, TEACHER EXPERIENCES! DUE 10/8
Our PTA Silent Auction Committee is begining to prepare for a wonderful Silent Auction event. This year, the Silent Auction is in November to avoid th busyness of the holidays. Our most successful items are the Teacher Experience Items! Please submit your Teacher Experience Items at the link below. All submissions are DUE by 10/8.

OPTIONAL MAGIC SCHOOL TRAINING, 9/14

Distric Tech Coordinator, Joey Glaser, will be in Katy's office on 9/14 for optional Magic School training, if you would like to learn more about how this district purcahsed AI tool can be used to support your teaching and instructional planning.  Joey will be available during Kinder, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade planning times.

It's our favorite time of year - Holidays in the Hive!  We love surprising you throughout the month with littles treats and treasures to bring you holiday cheer.  Some teams began the off campus outings today, with more scheduled next week.  We hope you find you find the time for team fellowship to fill your cup.
